Celebrating 20 Years!
When Special Spaces was founded in 2004 in Knoxville, TN, the mission was simple: build bedrooms and change lives. Fast forward twenty years with 1,700 children and 10 chapters nationwide, our dedication to this mission hasn’t wavered. For the past two decades, we’ve been focused on creating healing environments in the bedrooms of children facing cancer. Each of these special spaces allows a child a place to rest, play, and heal. A place to just be a kid and spend time away from all the challenges of their illness. Our dedication to this mission is unwavering, as we strive to offer them a sense of hope and joy throughout their recovery journey.

Our Mission
Special Spaces creates dream bedroom makeovers for dependent children ages 2-19 and are within one year of active treatment.
Through the child’s imagination and at no cost to the family, volunteers transform the existing bedroom into a magical place where they can not only sleep, but also play, heal and spend time away from the challenges of their illness. Whether they are dreaming of a princess castle, a butterfly bedroom, a pirate ship or a sports theme, we create a custom bedroom designed just for them. A place to just be a kid!
This effort is done with teams of dedicated volunteers, sponsors, community partners and donated goods and/or services. The Special Spaces team meets with the family, designs the bedroom and provides all of the needed supplies. Bedrooms may include new paint, furniture, bedding, flooring, window treatments, custom closet organization, medical storage, light fixtures, accessories and custom décor. With a “hands on” team, we create a very special bedroom.
